Level 1: The Foundation of the Coaching Pathway

Level 1 prepares coaches to deliver safe, effective, and engaging Chase Tag® sessions while progressing athletes through the Competitive Pass’Sport progression system.

What You Will Learn

The certification covers six modules spread across 30 chapters:

Module 1: Coaching Foundations

Your role as an L1 coach, coach presence and communication, safety responsibilities, warm-up design, injury response, ethics and athlete safeguarding, introducing beginners to Chase Tag®, and understanding the WCT coaching ecosystem.

Module 2: Teaching the Sport

Using the Competitive Pass’Sport as a development framework, teaching movement, WCT techniques, game strategy, physical preparation, demonstration and cueing skills, designing exercise progressions, calibrating assessments, and supporting athletes through plateaus.

Module 3: Session Design and Delivery

Session structure and flow, library of games and drills, designing sessions for different contexts, delivery skills, group dynamics and behaviour management, multi-session planning, assessment and iteration, troubleshooting, and planning tools.

Module 4: Equipment and Venues

Inspection and maintenance, designing and assessing the safety of an improvised Quad™, coaching without a Quad™, adapting sessions to constraints, equipment logistics, and failure protocols.

Module 5: Community and Business

Community leadership, running Squared™ Ranked Sessions, supporting competitive athletes, and contributing to official events.

Module 6: Practical Placement with a Mentor

Placement overview, finding your mentor and working with them, requirements, assessment criteria, running the placement, and building your career after certification.

Who This Training Is For

The L1 certification is designed for those ready to move from practitioner to coach. Candidates must have a solid understanding of Chase Tag® movement, have completed the Foundation Training, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to athlete development. No prior coaching experience is required.

Structure

The programme combines online training with a supervised practical placement of at least 20 coaching hours, including 10 hours of observation alongside a mentor. Most candidates complete certification within 2 to 4 months.

Outcomes

Once certified, you can deliver training sessions under the WCT brand, assess athletes at the White, Green, and Blue Pass’Sport levels, run Squared™ Ranked Sessions, and represent WCT as a certified coach. The L1 forms the foundation of a coaching career, with specialisation pathways and access to L2 certification.

Course Content

Module 1: Coaching and Safety
Upon completing this module, you will be able to apply the fundamental principles of coaching to teaching Chase Tag®, identify and reduce safety risks in training environments, deploy effective communication techniques with athletes of varied profiles, design warm-ups that prepare athletes physically and mentally, recognise common injuries and respond to them appropriately, and explain the WCT coaching philosophy along with the ethical responsibilities it entails.

Module 2: Competition Passport Mastery & Skill Progression
By the end of this module, you will be able to explain all Competition Passport levels and skill requirements, assess athlete skills accurately using standardised criteria, design skill progressions for individual athletes across levels, teach foundational movements with effective cuing and feedback, identify common technical errors and provide corrections & use the Competition Passport as a session planning framework.

Module 3: Session Design & Delivery
Upon completing this module, you will be able to design structured Chase Tag® sessions of 30 to 60 minutes for different levels and group sizes, apply the principles of periodisation to multi-week programming, manage group dynamics effectively (large groups, mixed levels, difficult behaviours), deliver sessions with clarity, energy, and adaptability, assess the success of a session and iterate from athlete feedback, and troubleshoot common in-session difficulties in real time.

Module 4: Improvised Playgrounds & Quad™ Management
Upon completing this module, you will be able to design safe improvised playing areas when the official Quad™ is not available, adapt sessions to different space and equipment constraints, and understand the responsibilities of a Quad™ owner.

Module 5: The Coach in the WCT Ecosystem

Module 6: Mentor Practicum & Sign-Off
The Mentor Practicum is the culminating experience of Level 1 certification. After completing all 5 online modules, you must demonstrate competency through real-world coaching under the supervision of a certified mentor. Format: In-person coaching session(s) at WCT® venue Duration: - Option A: 1 session (45-60 min) with Level 2 Head Coach mentor - Option B: 2-3 sessions (45-60 min each) with Level 1 Coach mentor (requires Head Coach final approval) Passing Requirement: Mentor sign-off with "Ready to Coach Independently" rating
